PostSubject: Interview with Red Queen Theory   Sun Feb 01, 2009 6:47 pm

Red Queen Theory are a four piece band from Seattle, Washington. As both the Lewis Carroll influenced band name and song titles like 'The Dream and the Tomb' & 'Of Ravens and Blood' suggest they base their sound partially upon literary fiction with names such as David Lynch, Tim Burton and Lord of the Rings all appearing in their list of influences.

Band Members :
Elizabeth : Vox Dominativus
Abel : Guitar
Jim : Drums
Dean : Bass

MySpace : www.myspace.com/antondomi2008

(Q)What are the origins of Red Queen Theory, and how was the name decided upon?
Liz : There was a genome sciences seminar, and the topic was evolutionary biology, and the first quote on the powerpoint presentation was Lewis Carroll's famous Red Queen quote: "It takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place". Proteins evolve to kick other proteins' ass, and so will we.

(Q)How did each member of the band become involved in Red Queen Theory?
Liz : I posted an ad on Craigslist, because, I decided that if I can give away 5 pieces of unwanted furniture in less than 2 hours on Craigslist, I can probably find someone who's willing to hear me sing. It took two weeks instead of two hours, though....
Dean : Jim and myself are good friends. We decided to do a project together and quickly found Liz on Craigslist. After a few months and several different auditions we found the aural assault named Abel.
Jim : Yeah, aside from being connoisseurs of good beer, Dean and I have many of the same tastes in music, so when he showed me some of the early ideas he had for some of the songs, I was very excited. It was the kind of project that I'd always wanted to be a part of.

(Q)How would you personally define your own style?
Liz : My personal style?..I don't know...but I grew up trying to imitate Sarah Brightman's voice in Phantom of the Opera, and then more recently I discovered Kate Bush and Tarja Turunen.

(Q)You list Lord of the Rings (LOTR) as one of your influences, before I even read that, the songs which are on your MySpace Playlist put me in mind of those films, what are your thoughts on this?
Dean : Well, it is nice to hear that that influence is apparent to you. That is something I think that we set out to do, to take the listener somewhere else for a moment.

(Q)One of the first things I noticed about your MySpace was the fantasy artwork, what can you tell us about the designer behind this and is it something you intend to have on any merchandise which you produce in the future?
Dean : The designers are Jim (our drummer) and his sister in law. And yes, the artwork fits well with the music so the designs or similar ones will likely wind up on merchandise.
Jim : We spent a few weeks kicking around variations for the bands name, and when we finally settled on RQT, the imagery that the name conjured for me was very dark and regal.

(Q)On the subject of your MySpace Playlist to my ears it sounds like Red Queen Theory have quite a diverse range, perhaps most notably are the soft songs 'By the Sea' and 'Olive Tree' serving to sandwich the heavier 'Of Ravens Blood' and 'The Dream and the Tomb'. What are your thoughts on this?
Dean : I think they maybe sound more diverse because when we write a quieter song we tend to rely on pianos and strings for subtlety instead of just turning down our guitars.
Jim : I think also, that Dean and Liz's writing styles and musical backgrounds compliment each other very well. The both come from very different musical places.

(Q)What first attracted you to becoming involved with this style of music?
Dean : If by "this style" you mean, heavy music. Then it was bands like Black Sabbath, Bauhaus and Janes Addiction. Our style is just a symptom of where we live though.
Jim : Very true. It's hard to get into the Beach Boys when it's grey and rainy for a large part of the year.

(Q)Outside of the world of music who would you most like to sit down with a drink and have a conversation with?
Liz : Anyone who's willing to sit down and have a conversation with me, while accepting the fact that if I drink, I'll become a sleepy red lobster, so I'm better off talking and not drinking.
Dean : Well, they are dead, so it would be difficult to pull off, but I always wanted to sit in an old library and have a drink and a smoke w ith Tolkien and CS Lewis. They could do all the talking, I would just listen. And have a drink of course.
Jim: Ramses II, and any of his artisans. I find that time in history incredibly interesting.

(Q)What can we expect to see and hear from Red Queen Theory in 2009?
Dean : We will continue to write and record until someone important asks us to stop. Other than that, who knows.
Jim : I'm excited about taking RQT on the road. The energy of our music is epic, and I cannot wait to share that with our fans.

(Q)Is there anything you would like to say which hasn't already been covered?
Dean : Yes, we will be featured on a compilation album titled Project X. It is being made to help raise money and awareness for mental illness and the people inflicted. You can learn more here http://www. myspace. com/projectxart
