PostSubject: Interview with Liquid Sky   Sun Feb 01, 2009 6:52 pm

Liquid Sky are a metal band from Manchester in the North-West of England who were formed in 2000. Since then they have alternated between supporting acts such as Skyclad and Octavia Sperati and gaining new fans by headlining shows of their own. With a current line-up of Tiffeny Joyce on Lead Vocals, Jonathan Craven on Guitar & Backing Vocals, Den Constable on Bass Guitar, Stuart Wright on Drums & Percussion, Rick Ogden on Keyboards & Backing Vocals and Andy Midgley on Guitar they remain ready to "make music you'll always remember".

(Q)For those who don't know, who are Liquid Sky?
We are a metal band, based in the northwest of England. The band formed back in 2000 and have been going from strength to strength ever since!

(Q)After numerous line-up changes over the last couple of years do you think Liquid Sky are now at a point where the key word might be stability?
While it always helps to have a line-up that stays the same, at the end of the day the band's music is the ongoing theme.

(Q)You recently signed with Insomnia Media and released the album Identity through their label. Would it be fair to say Liquid Sky aren't as much as Britain's best kept metal secret as they once were, both because of this and the high-profile shows you have performed at?
You might have a point! The band has been around for a while now and we have been fortunate to play some pretty high-profile shows, so yes, maybe were not as secret as we once were! However, we like to think that.

(Q)Speaking of the album Identity, what can you tell us about it?
It was an eleven-track labour of love for us! It took us a long time to get it from the first recordings to the final, finished version that people can now buy, but we're very happy with it and immensely proud of what we achieved. It?s got a lot of variation on it in terms of types of songs so hopefully, there is something there for everybody!

(Q)Who would you regard as your influences?
Wow! That?s a difficult question to answer, as there are so many! Each of the band members has their own specific set of influences but I suppose there are some common influences that the band has as a whole bands such as Lacuna Coil, Soilwork, Arch Enemy, Kamelot, Nightwish, Pink Floyd, Scar Symmetry, Dream Theater. As you can see, our influences are very varied!

(Q) You have a few shows lined up in December and the early part of next year, what can the fans expect?
We pride ourselves on putting on a fantastic live show for anybody that comes to see us. We are very conscious that right now, when money is tight for a lot of people, if people are spending money to come to a live show that we're playing at, we're going to make sure that they get value-for-money! People can expect an hour of full-on metal, lots of melody, guitar solos, catchy choruses, the works! We aim to please!

(Q) Speaking as an Iron Maiden fan - I watched a YouTube video of Liquid Sky with your new vocalist Tiffeny Joyce at the helm perform a cover of Iron Maiden's The Evil That Men Do? and was impressed with both the standard of the cover and the confidence on display. How often do cover versions find their way on to your set list, and generally how do you select them?
We always have one or two cover tracks kicking around that we know and can pull out of the bag at a gig. Obviously, like most bands, we prefer to play our own material but sometimes throwing in a well-chosen cover version can spice up a set! We tend to chose specific songs by two criteria - will they fit into the Liquid Sky set stylistically and also, can we do an interesting and possibly innovative version of a song that many people in the audience will probably know pretty well. As long as we're all happy that these two criteria have been met, the songs pretty much pick themselves!

(Q)Given the fact Liquid Sky have been around for quite a few years now how important do you think it is to keep yourself sounding fresh?
The music scene in general is constantly adapting and evolving, so all bands need to evolve as well. That's not to say that a band should change its sound simply to follow a trend but it makes sense to always offer your fans something a little bit new and different. Fortunately, all of the band members have very varied musical influences, so while Liquid Sky's sound stays the same overall, new and exciting elements are always creeping into it! Hopefully, people who listen to the band will identify this development and enjoy it as much as we do!

(Q)Over the last few years Liquid Sky have performed alongside quite a number of other bands, if you were given the choice who would you tour with next and why?
We always love meeting new bands and playing shows with people that we've not met or heard previously. It can introduce you to bands and music that you might never have experienced otherwise. I think that if we were given a free choice of bands to tour with, we'd probably have two groups of bands. The first group would be the metal heavyweights, Iron Maiden, Metallica, those kind of bands. You want to tour with them simply because of the experience of being around those guys, it would be incredible!
The second group of bands would at the other end of the spectrum, bands that nobody really knows about yet. We know so many bands that really deserve to be more well-known than they are, so we love being able to take bands like that out on tour with us.

(Q)If you were gifted with one superpower what would it be and why?
(laughs) Probably the ability to guarantee that we could get a multi-million pound record contract! I think that the reason for that should be obvious!

(Q)Do you have any final words for the fans?
Thanks for all of your support, it really is much appreciated! Keep your eyes and ears open for new material coming from us very soon and we hope to see you all at a gig very soon!
